Spelling provides a precise (but sometimes misplaced) phonological target. Orthography and acoustic variability in second language word learning

چکیده
L1 French participants learned novel L2 English words over two days of learning sessions, with half the presented their orthographic forms (Audio-Ortho) and without (Audio only). One group heard pronounced by a single talker, while another them multiple talkers. On third day, they completed variety tasks to evaluate learning. Our results show robust influence orthography, faster response times in both production (Picture naming) recognition mapping) for Audio-Ortho condition. Moreover, formant analyses Picture naming responses that input pulls pronunciations towards non-native (French) phonological target. Words were more precisely (with smaller Dispersion Scores), but misplaced vowel space (as reflected Euclidian distances respect vowels). Finally, we found only limited evidence an effect talker-based acoustic variability: talkers showed task, Audio-only condition, which suggests information may have overwhelmed any advantage variability.

Exploiting Orthography-free Phonological Evidence in Orthography-rich Language
In modern linguistics where natural spoken language has been the main, if not the sole, target of research inquiry, one area in which orthography becomes as yet at issue is phonology. This should be the case because (a) writing systems encode phonological structure, syllables in particular, as shown in Gnanadesikan (2011), accordingly (b) the orthographical knowledge of a language may merge int...
متن کاملA Word Superiority Effect in a Phonetically Precise Orthography
Other things being equal, a letter is identified more accurately and rapidly in the context of a word than in the context of a nonword. This word-superiori ty effect has been demonstrated many times wi th materials conforming to English orthography. The present experiment, using the probe letter-recogni tion procedure, demonstrates the same effect for the Serbo-Croatian orthography. In that the...
متن کاملSpeaker variability augments phonological processing in early word learning.
Infants in the early stages of word learning have difficulty learning lexical neighbors (i.e. word pairs that differ by a single phoneme), despite their ability to discriminate the same contrast in a purely auditory task. While prior work has focused on top-down explanations for this failure (e.g. task demands, lexical competition), none has examined if bottom-up acoustic-phonetic factors play ...
متن کاملLearning to spell in a language with transparent orthography: Distributional properties of orthography and whole-word lexical processing.
We examined how whole-word lexical information and knowledge of distributional properties of orthography interact in children's spelling. High- versus low-frequency words, which included inconsistently spelled segments occurring more or less frequently in the orthography, were used in two experiments: (a) word spelling; (b) lexical priming of pseudoword spelling. Participants were 1st-, 2nd-, a...
